Search for chiropractic pricing and you will find a lot of pages that carefully avoid answering the question. There are legitimate reasons for some of that, costs genuinely vary by what you need, but there is no good reason you should not be able to walk into a consultation knowing roughly what you are looking at.
Here is a straightforward breakdown of what chiropractic care costs in the Frisco and North Dallas market, what insurance typically does and does not cover, and the specific questions that will protect you from a surprise bill.
Typical costs in the Frisco / North Dallas market
These are general market ranges for the DFW area, not a Breakaway price list. Every practice sets its own fees and your actual cost depends heavily on your insurance.
- Initial consultation and examination: roughly $75 to $200. Some practices offer a reduced or complimentary first visit.
- Digital X-rays (spinal series): roughly $100 to $250 depending on how many views are needed.
- Routine adjustment visit: roughly $50 to $95.
- Adjustment plus therapies (laser, soft tissue, traction): roughly $85 to $175.
- Spinal decompression, per session: roughly $75 to $200, usually sold as a package of 15 to 25 sessions.
- Acoustic wave therapy such as StemWave, per session: roughly $100 to $250, typically 8 to 12 sessions.
What insurance usually covers
Most major carriers in Texas, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, include some chiropractic benefit, and Medicare covers spinal manipulation when it is medically necessary. VA patients are frequently covered through TriWest Community Care.
The catch is in the details. Plans commonly cap the number of covered visits per calendar year, often somewhere between 12 and 30. Many apply your deductible first, which means early-year visits can be entirely out of pocket. And a great deal of what makes modern chiropractic effective is frequently classified as non-covered.
Commonly covered
- Spinal manipulation / adjustment (CPT 98940-98942)
- Initial examination and re-examination
- Diagnostic X-rays when medically indicated
- Therapeutic exercise and manual therapy, on many plans
Frequently NOT covered
- Spinal decompression. Most carriers classify it as investigational
- Acoustic wave therapy such as StemWave
- Cold laser / photobiomodulation on many plans
- Massage and some soft tissue modalities
- Maintenance or wellness care once you are no longer symptomatic
- Nutritional counseling and supplements
Auto accidents are a different situation entirely
If you were injured in a car accident, you are very likely paying nothing out of pocket. Care is normally billed to the at-fault driver's liability coverage, your own Personal Injury Protection if you carry it, or handled on a letter of protection when you are working with an attorney.
The important thing here is timing rather than money. Get evaluated within 72 hours even if you feel fine, because whiplash symptoms typically peak two to three days after a collision and adjusters scrutinize any gap between the crash date and the first treatment date.
Questions to ask before you start a plan
- 1What is the total cost of the plan you are recommending, and how many visits does it assume?
- 2Will you verify my benefits and give me my expected out-of-pocket cost in writing before my first treatment?
- 3How many visits does my plan cover this calendar year, and have I met my deductible?
- 4Which of these recommended services are not covered by my insurance?
- 5When will you re-examine me to determine whether this is working?
- 6If I am not improving by that checkpoint, what happens next?
- 7Am I signing anything that commits me to a package, and what is the refund policy if I stop early?
How we handle it at Breakaway
Ruth, our office manager, verifies your benefits before your first treatment and tells you your expected cost in writing. You get a plan with a defined length and re-examination checkpoints, and if you are not progressing the way we expect, we change the approach or refer you out rather than continuing to bill you.
We also accept HSA and FSA cards, all major credit cards, and Apple Pay, and we offer self-pay packages for the services insurance tends not to cover. Call (972) 433-7557 and we will tell you what your specific situation looks like before you commit to anything.
