Otitis media is one of the most common reasons children see a doctor, and for some families it becomes a cycle: infection, antibiotics, a few good weeks, another infection, and eventually a conversation about ear tubes.
We want to state our scope plainly before anything else. Chiropractic care does not treat infection. We do not treat bacteria and we are not an alternative to your pediatrician. What we address is mechanical, and it is worth understanding why that is relevant here.
Symptoms we hear about
- Ear pulling or tugging, particularly at night
- Fussiness and disrupted sleep
- Fever accompanying ear discomfort
- Fluid drainage from the ear
- Reduced hearing or apparent inattention
- Loss of appetite or discomfort when lying flat
What usually causes it
- Immature, horizontally-oriented eustachian tubes in young children
- Poor middle ear drainage allowing fluid to accumulate
- Upper cervical restriction affecting surrounding musculature
- Frequent upper respiratory infections
- Allergies and environmental irritants
- Bottle feeding while lying flat
The drainage explanation
The eustachian tube drains fluid from the middle ear into the throat. In young children it sits nearly horizontal rather than angled downward, which is why drainage is poor and why ear infections are overwhelmingly a childhood problem, the tube reorients as the skull grows.
Fluid that sits in a warm, enclosed space is a favorable environment for bacterial growth. The muscles that open the eustachian tube during swallowing are influenced by the nerve supply from the upper cervical region, which is the mechanical connection chiropractic addresses.
What we actually do
Very gentle upper cervical work using fingertip pressure appropriate to your child's age, along with light lymphatic drainage technique around the neck and behind the ear. Sessions are short and children generally find them non-threatening.
The intent is to support drainage, not to treat an active infection. If your child has an acute infection, they need your pediatrician's evaluation, and we will tell you so.
Working alongside your pediatrician
We are not asking you to choose between us and your child's doctor, and we would be concerned about any practice that framed it that way. Many families use both, following the pediatrician's guidance on acute episodes while addressing the mechanical drainage side to reduce recurrence.
Parents commonly report fewer episodes over time. We track that honestly with you, and if we are not making a difference we will say so.
How we treat recurring ear infections in Frisco
Your plan is built from your exam findings, not from a template. These are the tools we most often combine for this condition.
Recurring Ear Infections: common questions
Can chiropractic cure an ear infection?
No, and we will not suggest otherwise. Chiropractic does not treat infection. We address a mechanical factor, drainage. That may influence how often infections recur. Active infections belong with your pediatrician.
Should we still see our pediatrician?
Absolutely, always. We work alongside your pediatrician, never in place of them. Any practice telling you to avoid your child's doctor is one you should leave.
Can this help us avoid ear tubes?
Some families report fewer episodes and end up not needing tubes; others still do. We cannot promise an outcome. What we can do is address the mechanical component and track results honestly with you and your pediatrician.
